Abstract:
Strymi The excavation of Tumulus E in the region of Mitriko, north of the ancient town, revealed a looted cist-grave which was constructed with four monolithic slabs connected with metallic junctions. On the grave and all around the area of the tumulus seven funerary offerings have been spoted. These offerings yielded a number of attic vases: two white lekythoi decorated with almost the same subject, a young man and a woman with a gravestone between them. These two lekythoi can be attributed to the workshop of the Reed Painter. Many black-glazed vases of the same period such as stemless cups with impressed and incised decoration, salt cellars, one plastic askos with a gorgoneion, one skyphos (boisai), one lopas e.t.c. All these vases are dated to the second half of the 5th century B.C. Peritalo fos The rescue excavation of a low tumulus situated north of the village, uncovereda quadrilateral grave cut in the rock and covered by a pile of irregular stones. A slab erected in an upright position functioned as a grave stele. The cremation of the dead took place near the stone-heap and the remains of it were put in the grave. From the grave goods of the dead only one silver coin of Sparadokos (445-435 B.C.) escaped from plundering. Two more tumuli (Γ and Δ ) in the site called Toumbes were investigated. Tumulus Γ proved to be a cenotaph since only funerary offerings were found. In Tumulus Δ a stone-heap covered two burials with destroyed skeletons. Near the burials Together with the remains of a ritual fire, a small black-glazed balsamarium with spherical body dated to the second half of the 3rdcentury B.C. was found. Komnina Rich surface findings from the site Mytikas near the village of Komnina ,was the main reason which led to the trial excavation conducted in this area. The results of the excavation were not the ones we expected. Pits and pithoi used as depositorys were revealed. Among various finds such as loom-weights, vases, a clay figurine of Cybele, iron agricultural implements e.t.c, special attention should be drawn to a rather large clay statuette of a naked reclined man accompanied by three snakes. It can be asserted that this statuette is a votive offering to an unknown until now sanctuary of Asklepius, depicting the procedure of healing through sleeping. Apart from the above, a cist-grave made of irregular stones was also found in the area. Among other grave goods a black-figured lekythos dated to the middle of the 5th century B.C and a silver oboi of Abdera (473/70-449/8 B.C) were found
