Abstract:
In 1993, excavation continued in insula 5 to the E of the Forum and impart of the so-called Via Egnatia in an easterly direction. Trial sections were also made to the S of the diagonal street opposite insulate 4 and 5.In the Via Egnatia the road surface was uncovered, as was the drainage channel under the middle of the road. On the road surface itself were found fallen columns, capitals, impost blocks, and also arches that had rested on them and belonged to the portico of the building that must have stood on the N side of the road. In insula 5, which comprises two units, a considerable part of the W d welling was excavated. The ground-floor rooms to the W of the little impluvium were store-rooms and workshops, and storage jars of various sizes were found inside them. The E wing of the insula, the excavation of which began this year, seems to have been part of a smaller dwelling, which was divided from the W dwelling by a passage leading from the so-called Via Egnatia to the diagonal street. The excavation of the diagonal street brought to light the road surface, which is badly damaged in many places, the S ker b, and some columns from the building on the S side. To keep it passable and hold back the ruins of the collapsing buildings, columns were laid along the edges of the road. Investigations to the S of the dwelling in insula 4 and the diagonal street yielded a new side street at right angles to the diagonal street and some as yet unidentified buildings to the E and W of it. The surface of the side street survives in excellent condition and, like the other side streets, it shows no traces of the passage of carts. The movable finds include some oil lamps decorated with pagan subjects, coins from various periods, and a head, lacking the face, reminiscent of a 3rd-4th c. Orpheus-Christ
