Abstract:
Excavations at ancient Stageira produced the following findings in 1994.i) Large sections of the city’s Early Classical fortifications were uncovered on the S hill. More specifically, a further 40 m of the inner side of the S section of the wall was cleared near the point where it meets the E section, a 31mstretch of which has also been uncovered (both sides). The wall survives hereto a height of 4 m, and the E section preserves another set of steps 9 m long. This year a large section of the W wall, which continues from where it meets the S wall, has also been investigated, for a distance of 180 m. The wall is badly preserved here, and large sections of it have collapsed into the sea. The N hill has yielded a further 20 m of the W continuation of the Late Classical wall (which was hitherto believed to be Hellenistic).ii) The whole of the E enceinte of the citadel of Stageira has been uncovered on the summit of the S hill. Like the W enceinte, this section too hasinterior stone buttresses (every 3 m), and there are also two strong, rectangular,tower-like structures, one on the inside and one on the outside of the wall. iii) On the saddle between the two hills and at the right end of the façade of the portico, a stone-paved street was uncovered that led to what was obviously a public building, which has been partially excavated. A large, well-constructed, stone-paved courtyard was uncovered directly in front of the building. iv) Parts of two stone-built houses came to light on either side of a narrow street on the E slope of the N hill. Five rooms in the house on the W side of the street have been explored so far, the most important of these being a large room with a square marble hearth precisely in the centre. Slightly further W on the same hill, part of what seems to be a workshop has been excavated. It probably housed a wine-press. Most notable among the movable finds this year are a large number of stamps on tiles (with representations that include a naked runner and ananchor), a clay tile with an archaic relief Gorgoneion, 100 or so almond-shaped lead sling-bullets (about half of which are inscribed with such names as Philippou, Potalou, Kleoboulou), and 170 coins, including two very rare silver coins of Stageira with a half boar on the obverse
