Synaxi, Maroneia : the pilgrims' hostel
Author:
Abstract:
The excavations on the coast at Synaxi revealed a secular building with a large number of rooms arranged, in the Graeco-Roman residential type, in two wings. The building had a broad veranda facing the sea. It was used as a hostel for pilgrims travelling to and from the sanctuary of the Great Gods on Samothrace. The hostel was constructed in the second century AD, when a sanctuary of Maron was founded at Synaxi, and continued to operate in the Early Christian period.
