Abstract:
Exploratory trenches were dug in the settlement of Klitos for the first time in the summer of 1995. It is one of a group of 14 prehistoric settlements in the basin of Lake Kitrini (Sarigöl) in Kozani prefecture, which date to between the6th and the early 2nd millennium. Klitos takes the form of a low mound and unfortunately modern farming activities have severely disturbed the settlement. Limited trenches were dug in the top and the periphery down to the natural clay subsoil. The finds date to the Late Neolithic and the very end of the Neolithic and share similarities with the contemporary material excavated from the Megaio Nissi mound at Galani. They include large quantities of pottery, stone and bone tools, bones of wild and domesticated animals, loom weights, and jewellery of stone, clay, and seashells. There are indications that the site was used continuously until the Early Bronze Age, and it was certainly re-occupied in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. At Xeropigado in the community of Kilada in the SE of the Lake Kitrini basin, a brief rescue dig (which will be continued) revealed the SW part of an extensive cemetery dating to a late period in the Early Bronze Age (end of the3rd millennium BC). Thirty-three graves of different kinds were investigated: pits in which the corpse was laid and then covered with a cairn or fragments of one or more large storage jars; pits surrounded by undressed limestone; child burials in jars; and 3 cremations. Almost all are primary burials. The dead are buried in a crouched position and accompanied by one or two vessels, usually small and kantharos-shaped or cups with a single handle. The discovery of the large, organized cemetery at Xeropigado and the conclusions drawn from its investigation help to fill a large gap in prehistoric research in the wider region of northern Greece
