Abstract:
Two subsequent mounds were discovered at Paliochora, in the area of ancient Abdera. However, the perimeter of each one and the dating of their use have not yet been confined. Seventy-two graves belonging to seven different types were discovered during the excavation: poros sarcophagi - A/10, clay sarcophagi - B/19, clay sarcophagi for children - Γ/9, ash-containers and burials in pots - Δ/22, pit-graves - E/9, tile covered graves - ΣΤ/1 and cist-graves lined with poros slabs - Z/2.The types of the tombs and primarily the grave goods document that this double tumulus has been used for two centuries. The cremations in the ash-containers and the burials in pots are the earliest, dated from the middle of the 7th century B.C.until the mid-6th century B.C. The rest are later, dated until the middle of the 5thcentury B.C. This long use of the mound coincides with the long urbanization periods of the area of Abdera: the area was firstly colonized by the Ionic city of Klazomenai in the middle of the 7th century B.C. for a short period, and after a century the area was colonized again by the inhabitants of Teos. The latter survived and their city was developed into a rich commercial and cultural centre.
