Abstract:
The rescue excavation carried out in 1997 by the 9th Ephorate of ByzantineAntiquities on Nekrotafio Hill at Neos Pandeleimon, Pieria prefecture, uncoveredpart of an Early Christian cemetery and three Roman lime kilns (PI. 1).The twenty-one burials we located were all in trapezial pit-graves, mostly hewnout of the natural rock. There were also some free burials, one secondary burial, anda small number of tile-graves (PI. 2, 3). The few burial offerings date to the fourthto fifth century AD (PI. 4-8). The three lime kilns, which are in the same area as thegraves, were built in a row entirely within the natural rock. They have a circularplan with an entrance at the south-east (PI. 9-12).Observations relating to the composition of the earthfill of the graves and theposition of some of the graves in relation to the kilns suggest that the kilns predatethe graves. There is some debate about precisely when the kilns were built andoperating. We believe, however, that they are Roman, owing to the presence of ahoard of Constantinian coins inside kiln 3, the complete absence of lime from theHellenistic phase uncovered at nearby Krania, and the intensive use of lime in theRoman period. We hope to produce data on the residential development and the socioeconomicrelations of the local people when the excavation is completed.
