Abstract:
The purpose of the archaeological investigations in the Pella Agora in 1997 wasto prepare the excavated site for public display and to resolve some archaeologicalproblems. Additional trenches were dug in the south portico to check thestratification; supplementary work was done in the west and north porticoes sothat the architectural survey could proceed. Part of a garment from a more-thanlife-size bronze statue was found in an area of the north portico housing asemicircular structure. In the east portico, we continued to remove the fill from the wells in areas 1,10, and 16, which had been investigated in previous periods, and reached thebottom of two of them. The well in area 16 yielded mainly pottery; apart fromceramic items, the lowest layers of the well in area 1 preserved pieces of wood, olive stones, and woody shells of almonds, walnuts, and hazelnuts. We alsocollected chestnut shells, pumpkin seeds, grapeseeds, sponge seeds, and parts of acomb. A bronze water bucket had fallen to the bottom with part of its chain. Onepot had been prominently incised with the name of one Polykrates from Larisa. The well in area 10 predominantly contained finds from a pottery workshop, including figurines, moulds for figurines, and unpainted and black-glazed vessels ofthe late second century BC.
