Bronze head of an athlete-statuette from the athenian Acropolis

In November 1984 a little bronze head of an athlete was by chance found on the Acropolis, east of the Parthenon (s. note 1). It is a masterpiece of art in all respects (f i g s.l -5). The whole expression of the young man shows thoughtfulness and a certain tension. From the swollen left sternomastoid we can assume that he was turning and leaning his head to the right (fi g s .l, 3, 5), while the fracture on the right side of the neck testifies that the right arm was lifted high. It seems that the athlete was a discobol in full action, as the study of the whole attitude and posture of the head shows. The position depicted here is perhaps the swinging of the disc before the final throw, as it is represented on the Panathenaic amphora in Naples (f i g. 6) and on the coins of Kos (f i g. 7) as well as by the Ludovisi discobol of the Thermes Museum in Rome. The structure of the head and the features of the face have led us to date it between 490-480 B.C. and to assign it to a Corinthian workshop. It seems that the statuette was the votive of an athlete on the Acropolis, but we do not know if it refers to a victory at the Panathenaic games or somewhere else.
