Abstract:
The first scholarly publication of folk songs, by Politis in 1914, was severely criticized by scholar of modern Greek language and literature, loannis Apostolakis. in 1929. His views ‘have since been adopted by many scholars'. However, no comparison, either full or even partial, has been made between the sources used by Politis and the claims made by Apostolakis, ‘so that some evaluation can be made of the quantitative and qualitative changes that Politis imposed', for which he has been criticized. The writer notes that Apostolakis was ignorant of the presence of ‘literarary archetypes' and other ‘characteristic’ elements that ‘form the backbone of oral folk poetry' (see also the paper by Vrynioti).
