Abstract:
Transition from rural to urban society in modern Greece brought about changes to the customs and rituals related to death and the dead. Traditional forms of ritual lament, funerary ceremonies, burial procedures and modes of mourning gave way to other forms of dealing with the reality of death. These forms are partly inherited from the past, albeit in a modified manner, and partly invented, their common characteristic being a pronou nced tendency toward uniformity and simplification. Thus are created new codes of behavior and communality concerning the departed and their presence in the memory of the living, codes based on urban values and relationships.
