Abstract:
In May and June 1986, a joint Greek-Canadian team under the direction of Mrs. Aglaia Archondidhou-Argyri and Dr. E.H.Williams carried out archaeological research in the Epano Skala district of Mytilcne, on a site first dug by the late S. Charitonidcs. Theteam undertook the task of cleaning the two major structures located here — a large Roman building and a portion of the Greekfortification wall which would have encircled the island, on which the southeast sector of the city was located. The Roman building consists of a courtyard with central pool surrounded by a portico and rooms opening off the portico. Evidence so far suggests a date of construction in the third century A.C. and a date of abandonment in approximately the middle o f the fourth century A.C. Outsidethe Classical wall were found remains which point to the establishment of workshops here. Cleaning of the area produced a large quantity of Classical, Roman and Turkish pottery.
